Starting on AdaptBB

A brand new blog has been posted talking about some of the planning and some of the features of AdaptBB. Here’s a snippet:

“AdaptBB was announced, amazingly, over 2 years ago and v1.0 was never released. But 2 years and a few weeks after the website was first registered, AdaptBB was announced to be back in development. Soon after it was decided that rather than finishing the script, AdaptBB would just be re-done. Now over a month later the work on AdaptBB is still starting, but it’s getting there. In this Blog I’ll be giving an inside look at the going-ons of planning for a new script and some of the planned features.”

AdaptBB was announced, amazingly, over 2 years ago and v1.0 was never released. But 2 years and a few weeks after the website was first registered, AdaptBB was announced to be back in development. Soon after it was decided that rather than finishing the script, AdaptBB would just be re-done. Now over a month later the work on AdaptBB is still starting, but it’s getting there. In this Blog I’ll be giving an inside look at the going-ons of planning for a new script and some of the planned features.

Planning

Of course for a new script, once you have decided what type of scripts you then need to think of an unused name for it. With AdaptBB that is done, along with the domain being registered.

Next what I did with AdaptBB was start the long process of brainstorming. Once you can get at least a basic structure, some of the main features and how a few may be worked out mysql-wise, then you can setup the mysql structure. Setting up the MySQL tables seems like such a minuscule step, but it is really the first major step until coding begins. With brainstorming the base structure and setting up the MySQL tables, you are creating a basic structure of how things will be worked out. Like for AdaptBB the groups system, templates, etc.

Brainstorming ideas, features, etc. is a process that lasts throughout development. Once you can get an idea, in this instance for AdaptBB, of the main features in the admin panel and the forums themselves, it’s time to code!

Features

The actual features list for AdaptBB so far is not that big. We’re mostly concentrating on getting the basics done before worrying about the fancy stuff. But there are some nice features we already are planning on having in the new forum system:

  • Plugins – Like AdaptCMS, Plugins will be a major aspect of AdaptBB. Whereas with with AdaptCMS you mainly see a plugin as a feature, something in addition, in AdaptBB it could be not only main features (like a store) but also things that extend other features.
  • Adaptable – Just like AdaptCMS, the driving force of the two scripts is to be adaptable, usable by any website. With AdaptBB we will have a simple but advanced template, settings area and a lot more so you can completely manage your forums from the ACP and easily get your layout setup on the forums.
  • CMS Integration – What may be the biggest thing that sets AdaptBB apart from other forum systems is CMS Integration. Every script wants that one feature that sets them apart and with CMS Integration, AdaptBB will have it. We don’t know how many, but 1.0 will come with the option of integration in many of the more popular CMS systems (including AdaptCMS). The level of integration is unknown at this point but some of the possibilities are of course users, profile info, articles/content and more!

Conclusion

Hopefully you enjoyed this inside look at AdaptBB. We’ll be doing Blogs often on AdaptBB, so you can see the latest progress of the upcoming script. Be sure to also keep an eye out on AdaptBB.com where you will see the latest updates and in the coming weeks, a brand new design.
