No matter how much they’re preparing, retailers always have to deal with issues on Black Friday. Take Macy’s, for example, who this year experienced a serious glitch in their credit card system. But hey, rewards cards were affected!

According to ABC News, this caused registers to stop working during Black Friday, but it was eventually resolved on Friday night. Shortly after, the company released a statement, explaining that it was caused by overcapacity.

All the problems were eventually solved

“We have fully resolved today’s system issues,” Macy’s said. “The delays we experienced this afternoon were due to a capacity-related issue that caused some transactions to take longer to process. We do not anticipate any additional delays.”

Earlier on Friday, a salesclerk from Chicago had to enter credit card number manually, but otherwise, there weren’t any issues. The overall shopping process went smoothly and lines at the registers didn’t have more than five or six people queuing.

“It is taking longer than usual to process some credit and gift cards in our stores, but we have added additional associates to the floor [who] are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” said Andrea Schwartz, vice president of media relations for Macy’s, when asked about the issue, on Friday afternoon.

However, there were a lot of customers who weren’t happy at all with this – as expected – expressing their feeling towards the situation on social media.

“Hey @Macys just left $300 of items on counter because your credit card machines are down at State St Chicago. Can’t even look up Macy’s account. What. A. Joke.” said Meghan McCollough on Twitter.

It happened all across the United States

Another user revealed that this wasn’t actually just a localized problem, but it happened all over the country. Even more, customer service representatives who were trying to help clients over the phone weren’t able to provide any assistance.

The entire issues arose a few hours after CEO Jeff Gennette declared that Macy’s is optimistic about this year’s Black Friday and claiming that they are “in a good place for holiday promotions.” Probably he may have spoken a bit too soon…
