After running Yahoo for almost five years, Marissa Mayer announced this Tuesday that she will resign from her position as Yahoo CEO.

According to Business Insider, the decision comes after Verizon’s acquisition process of Yahoo, for a total of $4.48 billion, has officially close, meaning that she ends her term with a $23 million payout.

During a conference in London, Marissa Mayer said that now that she’s no longer CEO, she’s looking forward to using Gmail again. Most likely, during these years, she was somehow obliged to use Yahoo Mail.

Formed by Google, so it’s not a surprise she’s a Gmail fan

On the other side, before joining the Yahoo team, she worked at Google for more than 13 years, being in charge of several products, including search and, of course, Gmail. Still, this doesn’t mean that she doesn’t like Yahoo Mail, one of the products she focused for the past years.

“I will continue to use the excellent Yahoo Mail too. The team’s hard work paid off with a dramatically better product,” Marissa Mayer said in a tweet sent today.

When Yahoo offered her the top position, she was considered one of the brightest stars in Silicon Valley and the board was hoping that she could turn around a series of failures which managed to completely transform the company, in a negative way.

Big company, big expectations

However, things didn’t go as expected, as Marissa Mayer was affected by Silicon Valley sexism even from her first days at Yahoo. Also, she struggled to maintain a decent work life balance, taking just two weeks of maternity leave in 2012, as well as a brief break in 2015, when she had twins.

Finally, Mayer’s harsh management style, as well as the multiple hacks which exposed users personal information, combined with revenue struggles weren’t exactly was Yahoo was looking forward to when she was appointed as CEO.
