Checking Credit Card

As you probably know, the law forbidding credit card companies to charge fees for transactions came into effect on Sunday, but according to a report from MoneySavingExpert, several councils and businesses are still doing it. Even more, some big brands have been wrongly warning customers that they will be charged.

Credit card users have been claiming that, when paying by card for various services or goods, they were still charged, despite this wasn’t supposed to happen anymore, starting with Saturday.

What are the new regulations?

To be more specific, the new law bans surcharges for paying using a credit or a debit card, including payment methods linked to your card, such as PayPal, Android Pay or Apple Pay. But companies can still charge you!

Don’t get too excited about this, though, since companies can still charge you. You will pay a small booking or admin fee, as long as it applies to other forms of payment. Also, you will be charged when using a business credit or business debit card.

Companies are sending warnings

In some places where fees are still paid, credit card users are warned about this. For example, the Student Loan Company posted a message on its website yesterday, announcing that payments made on credit card will be subject of a fee. Eventually, a spokeswoman announced that it was eventually removed.

Several Premier Inn locations around London have also been telling customers that Mastercard or Visa card payments would attract processing fees.

It’s worth mentioning that you can report if something like this happens to you. Specifically, if a company tries to charge a fee just because you want to pay by card, you can refuse, since, legally speaking it is not allowed.

If you want to take this one step further and help put an end to credit card fees once and for all, you can report this to Trading Standards.
