Credit cards can help you cut grocery costs

Checking Credit Card

You’re doing it at least once a week and it seems to be something completely natural, so you don’t give that much attention to your overall grocery costs, at least if you don’t tend to spend way too much on them.

However, there are actually a few ways of shopping for food in a strategic manner, so you can actually end up paying less for everything. Sounds good, isn’t it? Let’s find out how this can be done, by simply following a few tips.

Use a rewards card with a high rate for groceries

This is the first thing you should actually consider, since there are a lot of companies with such offers. Take the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, for example. This card offers 6% cash back on a lot of United States-based supermarkets, as well as up to $6,000 in spending, then 1%.

It’s worth mentioning that the card has a $95 yearly fee, but you can opt for the Blue Cash Everyday Card, from the same company, which doesn’t have any fee and offers 3% cash back at supermarkets, with the same $6,000 spending cap per year.

Max out rewards on one card with another card

This is a strategy a lot of people aren’t aware of, but it’s definitely worth giving a shot. After you hit a spending cap on a bonus category from a card, rewards usually drop to just 1%. When this happens, move your grocery spending to a card which has a flat cash-back rate, more than just 1%.

One great example is the Citi Double Cash Card, which offers 1% cash back when you make purchases, as well as another 1% when you pay them off. Of course, there are a lot of cards which offer 1.5% cash back on all purchases as well, but this one sounds like the best option.

Carefully choose the place where you shop

This may sound like a no-brainer, but a lot of people actually don’t even think about it.

A lot of grocery stores offer huge discounts, so if you combine this with a rewards card, you can save even more. Just take some time to research and you should definitely come across a grocery store near you, allowing you to save a decent amount.
